This talk and walk will provide a chance to see what hybrid vegetables are growing at the Fauquier Education Farm. Hybrids vegetables often produce large and more vigorous fruit that is more uniform in size and shape. Seed breeders have also introduce disease and insect resistance into many hybrids. Learn why saving seed from hybrid vegetable plants may or may not produce the same beautiful crops the following year.
Jim Hankins, Executive Director for the Fauquier Education Farm will be the presenter for this event. He will guide a tour and share his years of experience growing vegetables. Hankins is a former Small Farm Outreach Agent for Virginia State University, furniture maker, and commercial cut flower grower.
The Fauquier Education Farm is a small non profit on ten acres that focuses on demonstrating and teaching farmers and backyard gardeners how to raise small fruits and vegetables. The produce grown on the farm is donated to area foodbanks. Many volunteers contribute to the success of the Farm.
This event will be held rain or shine.
