Orchids 101

  • Virginia Cooperative Extension Office, 24 Pelham Street Warrenton, VA, 20186 United States (map)

Come join us for the educational seminar, “Orchids 101,” as part of our Twilight Talk series. In this presentation, Benton Murphy will join us via Zoom to discuss the widespread and diverse group of flowering plants that belong to the family Orchidaceae: Orchids! He will define what an orchid is, discuss orchid background and anatomy, and provide an overview of select orchid genera. He will also explain plant selection and care, as well as common pests and diseases, and how to treat them.

Benton is an Extension Master Gardener with the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia and is an avid orchid collector with more than 40 plants in his home collection. His other gardening and plant interests include vegetable gardening (especially tomatoes), cacti & succulents, and gardening for pollinators. Benton’s favorite orchid is Zygopetalum “Australia Advance.” Free and Open to the public.
