Seed Collection and Annual Plant & Seed Giveaway

The Master Gardeners of Fauquier and Rappahannock Counties (MGFRC) are offering a free event, as part of our seminar series “Saturdays in the Garden.” The event will include a presentation on “Seed Collection” and will be followed by our “Annual Plant and Seed Giveaway” on Saturday, September 28th at 1:00 PM, in-person, at the historic Marshall Schoolhouse #18 Demonstration Gardens, 7592 John Marshall Highway, Marshall (next to the Recycle Center). The presentation will start at 1:00 PM and will last about an hour and 15 minutes, including a short question and answer period. Following the presentation will be a giveaway of plants and seeds grown by Master Gardeners, for free to those interested, while supplies last. The event will be held rain or shine.

During the presentation, Bert Harris, Co-Director of the Clifton Institute in Warrenton, Virginia, will discuss the Virginia Native Seed Pilot Project at Clifton Institute, the importance of collecting native seeds, seed collection materials and protocol, as well as seed preparation and storage. He will provide guidelines to collect seeds ethically in public spaces and identify plants that are native to Fauquier County. Gary Rzepecki, Director of Parks and Recreation for Fauquier County, will discuss how the #18 Schoolhouse native plant garden is utilized to support meadows in the Northern Fauquier Community Park.

Parking is limited at #18 Schoolhouse. Additional parking is available at the Northern Fauquier Community Park or along Whiting Road. Please do not park along Highway 55.

Please also note that the number of chairs in the schoolhouse is limited. If you are able to bring your own folding chair, that would be helpful.

Please register for the event below. Registration is not required, but it is appreciated, as it helps us prepare.
